3 Ways To Treat Your Septic System Right This Year

Posted on: 16 January 2018

If you have a septic tank, make sure that you take steps to treat your entire septic system right this year. There are lots of different ways you can take care of your septic tank, from watching what you put down your drains, to insulating the pipes, to protecting the drainage field.

Watch What You Put Down the Drains

One of the first things that you need to do to treat your septic system right is to be careful about what you put down your drains. In your bathroom, use covers on your bathtub and shower to catch hair, so it doesn't go down your drain. Only flush toilet paper down your drains and put all other products that you use in your bathroom into the trash, not down your toilets.

In your kitchen, the key is to put as little grease and food down your drains as possible. Scrape off plates, pots, and pans into the trash or compost. Allow as little food particles as possible down your drain. Keep your kitchen drain clean by using baking soda and vinegar to clean it on a regular basis.

Insulate Your Pipes

You don't want to have to deal with a frozen septic tank ever. The best way to avoid this is by adding insulation to all of your drainage pipes. It doesn't cost that much to insulate your pipes, and it doesn't take that much time. Insulate your pipes this spring, so when next winter rolls around, you don't have to run water when it is really cold to keep your pipes from freezing; you can rest assured that the insulation you added to the drainage pipes will keep them from freezing up.

Protect the Drainage Field

Finally, make sure that you protect the drainage field for your septic system. You should only plant grass and other plants with short roots over the top of your drainage field. Do not plant roots with long root systems, such as trees and shrubs, as they can damage your septic system.

Do not park your vehicles on top of the drainage field. It is best to limit activity over the top of your drainage field. You don't want the soil to become compacted from activity or vehicles.

Take care of your septic system by limiting what you put down your drains, insulating all of your drainage pipes, and protecting your septic tank's drainage field. To learn more, talk to companies like Chuck Keene Septic Tank Pumping Service.
